Loose bearings in my pedal

I'm wondering if anyone can help me service my pedal bearings? There's a good 2-3mm wobble in them.

When I prise off the plastic cap, I can see the cone deep down inside, and there's a smaller (8mm?) locknut on top. I can fit a 10mm socket over the cone, and tighten or loosen to my heart's content. The problem is with locking the locknut given how deep inside the casing it all lies: for the life of me I can't see how I'd tighten the nut while also holding the cone still. I can tighten it up while *not* holding the cone still, but of course that just tightens up the bearing.

Any thoughts, do let me know! Many thanks. Ed

what kind of pedal is it?

At one time most pedals had a 'tab washer' that prevented the cone from turning as the locknut was tightened. With a little trial and error this usually allows the pedal to be adjusted. The procedure was to prod the cone round with a screwdriver whilst the locknuts is loose, then tighten the locknut. Then try again. etc etc.

You can tell if there is likely to be tab washer because the end of the pedal spindle won't be round, it will have a groove or flats on it against which the tab washer engages.

However an increasing number of pedals have no tab washer, and must be adjusted using a tool comprising a pair of thin-walled sockets.

Several shimano pedals are like this, and there is a special tool for the adjustment accordingly. The tool is expensive, but at least it exists; many other pedals are made similarly and there is no tool made.

cheers

In the past i have managed to hold the cone from rotating using a thin bladed screwdriver whilst tightening the locknut.
Can't guarantee it with your pedals but worth a try.

Thanks both, I'll give those a try.
