Summer sleeping bag advice

Post by 1982john »

Hey everyone,

This has now doubt been asked before but I did some searching and couldn't find much.

Going to be touring a basic route of uk - turkey starting late May and struggling to decide on a sleeping bag with my only experience of camping consisting of festivals where the tent didn't get much use....

Would a 2 season bag suffice?

I'm thinking either

Or

Which is a really good weight.

Combined with a sleeping bag liner and I can always wear some camping clothes is this viable or should I go a bit more heavy duty?

I have had frost on tents in late May (In Chepstow last year for a starter).

However I would suffer having to dress up and be a little cold at the beginning to avoid being over equipped in Turkey. Unless you are going somewhere mountainous out there.

The second bag unzips into a blanket, which I would find invaluable for a warmer climate. At that point I would probably be sleeping on the bag only in the liner.

Yes, this. You need to be at a comfortable temperature to sleep well, on a tour that's likely to have a wide range of conditions a bag that can be opened up is essential, well it would be for me.
Also, you loose more heat to the ground than to the air, so what you are sleeping on is as important as what you're covered with. The sleeping bag underneath you offers very little insulation once compressed.

I've just bought a trek lite 250 for summer use, and slept in it at home a couple of nights. Very light, very warm, very comfortable. I paid £72.50 for it - they're around at well below list price if you search.
As meic says, you may need to wear clothes inside it for a night or two early on, but after that it'll do the job.
