Agree about the Calmac food (on the larger ferries), has always been pretty good. Never had any problems with leaving bags on the bike on any of the Calmac routes and would rather do that than lug a set of panniers around. Will be putting this to the test again later this week. I've got enough ferry trips to actually make it worth getting an Island Rover card!

Have a fab time Andy

look forward to hearing about your trip! Hope the wind follows you round
Those Rover/ Hopper cards are fantastic value - think it cost me £32 for 4 ferries last year - about 11 hours of sailing time. Compared with rail travel... cost me £20 today for 4 trains - less than 2 hours journey time. Though probably distance would be a better measure than time...
Back to the food... my soup on the Barra ferry was very nice - until I parted company with it during the rough crossing

Having been on a few ferries its really useful if you pack your panniers (e.g. in the morning) in such a way that you can just take the 1 or 2 pannier with valuables/overnight stuff for the trip so that you're not having to do this on the ferry. The fewer bags that you need to carry the better as there can be a lot of stairs. You also want to keep a beady eye open for bits of rope for tying up the bike in hold - if there are a lot of cyclists then you can end up having to secure bikes with towels etc (been there!).

I take a luggage strap with me to secure my bike on the ferries, quick and easy to secure and release and easier than ropes to get your bike nice and tight up against the bulkhead to prevent rubbing and other damage. Most of the ropes on calmac ferries provided for tying your bike up always seem to be impregnated with oil and grease.
