Holy Island
Holy Island
Well, I'm looking at various ideas for my first mini tour of the year with the kids. One possibility is a weekend ride up to Holy Island. As anybody spent a sneeky night wild camping on the island? Looking at photos on Google Earth it certainly looks like it should be easy enough to find a quite out of the way spot to camp.
Re: Holy Island
A lot of the island is owned by the National Trust and they are very fussy about protecting the islands natural environment, so I would seek permission first.
Re: Holy Island
There are no quiet bits on the Island!
Fisrtly it is a busy tourist trap duringthe day time, but changes to a place of solitude and quietness once the coaches have gone and the tide is in.
However there are always people walking around the dunes, coast and inland areas, so you will be spotted, and as above they are very protective.

Re: Holy Island
You're unlikely to get permission to wild camp, especially as there's a 'proper' camp site opposite the island at Goswick.
I've wild camped at Ross Back Sands, on the mainland and south a bit, near the two stone navigation beacons... all perfectly illegal, of course. But if anyone had asked me to leave, I'd have happily moved on!

The campsite at Goswick was closed last August. There is a good campsite at The Barn at Beal who also have a cafe and do a champion breakfast. The site is on the road which leads to the causeway.
It was fantastic opening my tent to the sight of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle.

Barn at Beal is very nice for a visit anyway
Re: Holy Island
Thanks for the info folks. I've never visited the Island myself but on my frequent flybys while riding the East Coast Mainline I've often thought it looks worth a visit. Perhaps not a good idea to try and camp there.
