After using unsuccessfully usingdifferent normal penetrating oil brands and also a mixture of penetrating oil and hydraulic brake fluid, I experimented with a mixture of acetone (nail varnish remover) and brake fluid. It smelled vile but it was much more effective after soaking.

Can you be sure it was not one of the earlier penetrating oils which finally got to where it was needed, rather than the last product used which resulted in success?

acetone-and-oil mixes do work pretty well but it is as well to remember that acetone can attack paints.

And so can brake fluid - even more so than acetone.
