I don't think much of the mudguard fork bracket rubbing on the headset either

He looked a bit sheepish when removed his disc braked front wheel and put it in the right way for him,he'd ridden ten miles before stopping

If that were the case I'd agree.IMO most people want reasonable service from any shop when they buy a new bike/TV/Fridge/etc.If it were a case of £600 with service or a third of without most people would take the chance and pocket the £200 but that clearly isn't the case.

I think I would be happy to buy bikes from Edinburgh cycles as their response about cable rub is what I would consider reasonable on a bike at their prices.

Yeah but we are "Anoraks" who'd buy some helicopter tape and do a bit of DIY fettling, that's why I'm typing this and you are reading it

As I mentioned before, I don't think it is a good idea for novice cyclists to buy bicycles via mail order; such disappointments and misunderstandings are very likely.

I agree but it's the way so much shopping is done these days,it's when there's a problem with the product that the real problems can begin or perhaps when the customer doesn't know the product, and I'm not for one minute saying the OP doesn't.

........The "rattling from the 'bars" could be a headset problem, equally so it could be something unrelated, perhaps the OP could let us know.

the OP suggests that he rode 200 miles with the bars rattling; I am happy to be corrected, but I would say that this is most likely not the act of someone who 'knows the product'.

I heard it reported recently that the average length of time spent reading the instructions/setting up a new electrical product (no matter how complicated) was somewhere in the region of ten minutes. If it took longer than that to set up, there was a very good chance that the product would be returned for a refund, or would simply remain unused.

Arguably if a product has as simple primary purpose, it shouldn't be too hard to make it do that... but there are plenty of things in this life where you don't get too much out unless you put something in, either. I have found that bicycles (and cycling in general) are like that.

cheers

On seeing a close up on screen I thought before I post I would check how close :? Its close but not touching, but I will check for rubbing as I know some bright person will suggest another reason for headrace failure  Thankyou

I agree, there are many moving parts on a bicycle and a modern bicycle can be a complicated piece of equipment needing regular attention.
We await the OP's response to our musings of his problems.
