As for the hub, it will either be a SON 28 or a SP PD-8.

Been thinking about getting the SP hub as well - looks like a good weight/price option for one. Still need to learn how to build whees before I buy anything!

I think that most us here learn how to build wheels by practice.

Either by taking old ones apart or repairing or buying new components and getting started.

The best place to start is on the relatively simple task of replacing the rim on a front wheel.

Yeah, I have a whel that I built ages ago, hardly used it as I changed bikes. Was going to take it apart and rebuild it and practice truing it until I learn how to true/tension correctly.

For the moment I have an old wheelset from a vintage bike I'm restoring that is out of true, lacking tension and isn't dished correctly. I'll start with that.

Think I have a few sets of them in the shed as well. So rusted I'm not sure if the nipples will seperate from the spokes...

They would make pretty good candidates for re-spoking with stainless spokes if they are worth the expense.

If you were already buying other stuff from bike shops you could build reasonably good wheels from as little as

Hubs £6
Spokes £8
rim £18

Though that hub is for dry weather only in my experience.
