Small Meths Based Stove

Post by groberts »

A couple of years ago I was kindly given a used (but still perfectly usable) Trangia from somebody on this Forum. I have since used it often and am well impressed, in particular I like its simplicity, the meths based flame and its ability to work well & safely in windy conditions. However, there are times I just want an even lighter / smaller set up to make a brew to start and finish the day when touring and otherwise eat out. Can anyone recommend a smaller meths based stove for this purpose; it also frees up space in the pannier. I like the idea of staying with meths as it is easy to find + easy to use; I have a small Gaz stove which in my experience is susceptible to wind and a petrol stove, which can be messy, though burns well once warmed up.

Two I have so far come across are:

(i) Clikstand http://www.clikstand.com/ which I like the look of but is not cheap and seems difficult to purchase except directly from the USA, and

(ii) The Pocket Stove - looks like it will do the job with meths + other fuels too. My concern is that it looks more exposed to wind. http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/bushcraft/RD104.html

Comments on these + other ideas please?

The Trangia Triangle is very similar to the clikstand, a windshield of some kind around your pan is helpful in windy conditions though.

Caldera soda can stove - as light and as simple as they get:

Although I suspect that the more practical option would be the Caldera Cone - although it depends on whether you already have a suitable mug.

Dozens of DIY alcohol stove designs are on the web. An excellent tutorial, with examples, can be found at Zen and the Art of the Alcohol Stove.

The advantage of the Clikstand over the Trangia Triangle is that it has tabs on the outside corners, on which you can stand a windshield that isn't too tall to fit in the pan.
Clikstands are occasionally available in the UK. Try bushcraft and survival type shops as well as regular outdoor shops.
