I have bought a new frame and am trying to work out a cost effective and useful groupset.
Given the price of shimano STIs (and I do like STIs) is there any reason why I could not run campagnolo centaur 10 speed levers with a either a shimano 9/10 speed setup?
In fact what set up could I run - 9 or 10 speed?
Also would it have to be road or could I use a long cage SLX rear derailleur to get a wider range at the back (although Shimano are now doing a 30 teeth tiagra cassette, just not sure what it runs with).
I was then going to fit 105 compact cranks and front derailleur.
Any advice appreciated.
thanks

Groupset mix and match - campag centaur and which shimano?
Re: Groupset mix and match - campag centaur and which shima
A common concept.
You want to do a search on the term "shimergo" and search through the CTC web pages for Chris Juden's definitive (at the time) write up on it.

Re: Groupset mix and match - campag centaur and which shima
Hi, just did that, apparently I can run a shimano 8 speed (not sure if road or mtb) with 10speed campag levers. I think the issue is the front derailleurs for which campag use some form of indexing and are not entirely compatible.
I was hoping it would be simple but alas I don't think its that easy.

try to get older scnd hand 10spd ergos with non-indexed front shifting. That should do the job. Either with 8 spd or with 9 when utilizing different cable routing.

this is actually taken from this site, but I just wanted to share it that you can find references for this site in other sources as well. : )

I'm located outside the UK. Never been there, not even considering getting a work there once I have my degree.

Re: Groupset mix and match - campag centaur and which shima
All Campag' 10 speed right hand Ergo's will match to a Shimano rear derailleur and 8 speed cassette exactly.
The left Ergo is best if one of the older versions as they had about 9 "clicks" giving a non-indexed action so matching virtually any front mech' set up.
My Bob Jackson has 10 speed Veloces with an 8 speed Shimano RD and triple 105 front derailleur.
I also have a bike with a full 10 speed Centaur groupset. I once fitted a wheel that had a 10 speed Shimano cassette and that worked O.K. after a bit of adjustment. The rear derailleur was very close to the spokes so required the stop screws to be set properly.
(That wheel had a larger sprocket than the Campag' one so easier to climb hills with.)
(I have since got a Campag' cassette (13/29) so gone back to the Campag wheel.)
Personally I would recommend sticking with one manufacturer. Shimano groupsets have a bigger gear range than Campag' but I do like the Campag Ergo's from an operational point.
Note. All Shimano rear derailleurs, road and MTB, had the same "cable pull" so that a 9 speed would work with 8 or even 10 speed STI.
It's only 10 speed MTB (and probably the new 11 speed) that bucks the system now.

A man can't have everything.
- Where would he put it all.?.

Re: Groupset mix and match - campag centaur and which shima
thanks, my issue was one of cost and the campag stis are hugely more cheaper than the shimano ones.
I think I will stick with a shimano set up
