National Cycle Network route 2 Southampton

Post by somebloke »

I've been checking out the NCN route from Gosport to Southampton. It appears to go through BROWNWICH FARM ESTATE on private roads.
Does anyone know anything about this part of the route?
Any advice much appreciated.

As a nipper in the 70's, I once cycled down Brownwich lane to the sea, and was chased by 2 large & nasty Doberman's. AFAIK, the road is private and has no access. At the end, nice views out over the Solent, though.

From Gosport, I would take the B3333/3334 to Titchfield > Warsash > Bursledon > Lowford > Woolston > Southampton. You could detour after Lowford into Netley Abbey & continue into Woolston along the coast.

Maxglide - things may have changed since the 70s, a lot has.

I don't know the area so can't say either way. If you are sure it isn't passable then it might be a good idea to inform Sustrans, as it is shown as a route on their mapping (including marked access points - link), & amend it on the OSM maps, where it is also shown.

Those two dogs are probably dead!

Brownwich Lane was private then, and apparently, still is.

Due to restrictions on access from Brownwich Farm along a private road and at Chilling, where the road is now closed by a gate, the only real access is from the main car park west of Stubbington, near Hill Head.

Back then, I seem to remember agro between locals who wanted car access to the beach and people who lived along the lane, who insisted it was private.

FWIW I used to live in Brownwich Lane on a strawberry farm.

Can't remember its status as I was only two.

Perhaps the section of route you referred to is a permitted path? I vaguely remember from more recently that it might be.

Ah. So it looks as though it's usable now. I guess we'll find out when they get there. Need to get from Gosport ferry to Hythe ferry as part of a long distance ride over 4 days.
Thanks.
Any more info out there about this section of the route?
