I realise few of you are in Belfast or NI but thought you might enjoy this.
I like the philosophy (and cost) of The Fred Ride

I didn't know 'Fred' was a derogatory term used by roadies?

I've never heard the term either. Perhaps it's only in NI :D

I've heard the term. In the UK mainland they're called SkyRides. :P

I'd love to do the Ride on Belfast, albeit from further out The "Comber Greenway" is what we used to call the Old Railway. The garden of the house I grew up on backs onto the erstwhile cutting at Abbey Road. Back then it was a bridge with quite a respectable drop, and there were still rails in place. They were salvaged in the 50s, even before Beeching put his oar in.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

I've heard it applied to tourists (especially with sandals and beards, before.

I think that I first came across it in Kimmage's book - it was the camel that broke his straw, when he was struggling up a mountain, in last place, a 'Fred' over took him...and this decided him to use drugs for the next stage of the race IIRC.

I'm just back from a ride to Saintfield, Derryboye, Killinchy, Comber and home along the Greenway.

I'm going on the afternoon ride, can't make the morning one as it's right in the middle of the school run. My regular Sunday morning training route is Ormeau Park, Lisburn via the towpath, Saintfield via Temple, Ballygowan, Comber Greenway home. I'm doing it on a BMX at the moment whilst I finish building a racing Raleigh 20 for this years Lap the Lough.

Yes - was a powerful day's cycling @ The Fred Festival. We even managed to set a Butcher's Bike record on the velodrome.
Harry K was on the clocks.
