*****Dogs

Post by PRL »

On Sunday I was cycling on a widish restricted road through our local Royal Park on my way to lead a ride.I noticed a dog running off to one side but it suddenly veered in front of me. It must have caught my front wheel as the bike went to the left and I continued in a state of uniform motion forwards until I hit the ground.
The park police gave me a lift to the local hospital where a broken collar bone was diagnosed so I am off the bike for a while. :(
Yes the doctor did say "good job you were wearing a helmet" despite the helmet showing no sign of having hit the ground.

I'm loving the warm weather at the moment, but it seems to have woken all the dog owners who now wander all over the local cycle path in increasing numbers.
I usually slow right down when passing them, but even at 5mph I've had to slam on the anchors because some mutt high-tailed it away from its owner and into my path. Then there's all the little presents they leave all over the trail...grr.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks back, cycling home after a club ride through Ashton Court in Bristol. I'll always take the A4 into town from now on. Grazed elbow which cleared up in a couple of weeks, but I think I might have chipped the bone ever so slightly as it's still sore to lean on in a very localaised spot.

Yes the dog walkers are out in force on every single cycle path, endless lines of them, none of the dogs on leads. Several times I've gone past at walking pace to which the owners are like "Don't worry he's ok", at which point the dog runs in front of my wheel and I have to slam on :(

No another reason to use appropriate speed on a shared use path.

Yes, but my point is that even when going just above walking pace - they still run in front of you.

Dogs? You should worry! Riding in to work this morning a cow* wandered across the road right in front of me and forced me to brake.

I've come across a cow as well! On a main A road between Barnstaple & Torrington, on a dark winter morning with me going down hill on my bike. Main reason for seeing it was the lorry stopped in the road coming the other way (the cow was black and wasn't wearing any hi-vis). I stopped as well and we ushered it into someones (farm) drive and shut the gate! Strange that none of the other cars stopped and helped.
I've also come across a herd of sheep being ushered along the same main road.
That's Devon for you!

But since the "appropriate speed" is about 3mph, they're not fit for purpose. Hence they're ****.

That is funny! It's good that it was just a near miss, though! It could have painful instead of funny.
