Bent rear axle-again.

Post by student »

My problem is quite easy. Some days ago noticed loud clicking in the rear hub with each revolution of the rear wheel. Disassambled, the axle looks slightly bent, as well as the quick releaser. Without having any replacament parts available today (saturday..) I just put it together again after some lubing up. The noise-clicking is now gone, the wheel spins smootholy, but I can't deny that there's a bend in the axle.

So, replacement is a neccessity. What type of rear axle would you suggest for oldish campy 8speed rear hub? I know that they use different axle than modern 9-10-11 sp hubs, but are replacement parts freely available anywhere if there's an issue like this?

thanks and cheers.

campagnolo axles for hubs that take a screw-on freewheel (I am assuming this might be what you have) used always to be 10mm x 24 tpi (or something like that; please check). There are a few pattern parts available, which may be made of better quality material than the campag versions, which are now hard to find.

I have bent and broken many such campagnolo axles, and so have my fellow cyclists.

If it is a cassette hub; spares for Campagnolo 8-speed cassette hubs are now very difficult to obtain, as far as I know. Bent axles are not that common; it may be that the axle is cracked and is actually in the process of breaking. There is a bad stress concentration where the RH bearing mounts in most of the designs that I have seen; because any crack will be hidden by the cone, you may not see it at first. The cone usually just knocks off the axle; once off, you can carry out a proper inspection for cracks. If it isn't cracked, you may be able to straighten the axle and carry on with it a while yet.

cheers

They are similar to these. eight speed cassette rear hub, athena.

I don't know what type of rear axle should fit just finely. I don't really know whether they require any spec. one.

if yo ulook on the campagnolo website they have an archive of their old spare part catalogues going back to about 1992. You will be able to find the part number there, and then some googling may get you what you want. If you were in the UK I'd advise you to contact campag suppliers such as G Butler, Ribble etc as well Mercian cycles, or JD Whisker since they have always held stocks of older campag stuff.

seems like the required part is FH-AT101 rear axle. I don't really know whether it'd be appropriate to use some "off-brand" rear axle due to financial difficulties..

I reckon you may have a problem getting a new axle, but it's just possible someone may have one.

The Athena one is physically identical to the Record one, but I would think the Record one will be stronger and is the better choice.

Because of the unusual way the RH hub bearing cone mounts, I'm not sure that there are any other options beyond campagnolo for a compatible part. I don't recall ever seeing any, anyway.

I :) i should have known when decided to buy 8spd campa that it's a sure way to.. hell. : )

I haven't heard any klicks today after re-tensoning the spokes, greasing the axle, and it spins smoothly, so I guess it's not an urge to get a replacement ASAP.

especially when I see that 9speed stuff is ... actually cheaper.

http://apro.bikemag.hu/browse/orszaguti ... 9201.html#

VGC chorus 9speed groupset.
Chorus crankset 53/39 chainrings, 172.5 mm crank length
Chorus 9sp rear and front derailleurs
Chorus 9sp ergopowers, dual pivot calipers.
Chorus 27.2mm seatpost
wheelset.. chorus hubs, 9spd cassette, campy rims

approx. 360 pounds. : -\ would look nice on the vintage frame, esp. with my current deore lx headset :)
