My LEJoG starting July 4th

I am cycling LEJoG with my Sister. We are booked on the train to Penzance on the 4th July. We are unsupported up to Glasgow. Our support stays with us to JoG and gives us and our bikes a lift home. We have booked the B&Bs all the way up. So now it is a case of finalising the route. Having never cycled outside the Chilterns so all the route is unfamiliar to me. If anyone has any comments about sections of the route they are familiar with I would be very interested to hear them.

Nice routes.
Your brave adventuring up The Struggle, 20% gradients for much of the way and very tough going especially after breakfast!
Beautiful around there though, so it'll be worth it. Hope the weather is kind!

I hope you have good brakes too for the descent on the other side towards Ullswater. The climb up Park Bank away from Ullswater after 11.5 miles is a stiff one too.
A couple of comments on the Euxton to Ambleside route the day before:-
- At about 17 miles consider bearing right into Garstang if you are wanting a snack stop or shops.
- At 47.5 miles instead of bearing left onto the A 590 - a busy 70mph dual carriageway with minimal shoulder (Google StreetView) - continue under the A590 into Levens, turn left into Church Rd, at the far end of the village turn right at the giveway into Lowgate (not named) & immediately left into Underhill by the Hare & Hounds, then left over the stone bridge onto Old Rd. Follow that to the T junction at the end & turn Right (past the Jag garage) & right again after crossing the river to get you back on your original route up the A5074. It's a bit of wiggling around but adds less than 1/2 mile & does avoid the dual carriageway.
Rick.

I live in Garstang, (day 11) and often meet end to enders passing through. Most plan on heading straight up the A6 through Lancaster, but I see you have wisely chosen the A588 from Cockerham (Mile 24). Lancaster can be a bit nasty to get through, but there is a good alternative cycle track. You can join at Conder Green just before mile 27, it follows the River Lune into Lancaster on a good surface. At the end of the track and along the quay you will come to the Millennium Bridge. Cross that to avoid a very bad road bridge carrying the A6 over the river. Back onto the A6 around mile 36. No extra mileage or hills.
There is also a good canal towpath all the way up from Lancaster. (Join it just after mile 32) - to Carnforth (mile 37). This may add a couple of miles but keeps away from traffic. From Carnforth the A6 is pleasant cycling all the way up to Levens

I have driven up 'The Struggle' and fancied giving it a go, would have liked it to be a bit later in the day. I just hope the mist is not too low that day.

Hope the brakes are up to it.
Thanks for your comments re the route. I have modified the route to avoid the dual carriageway.

Thank you for taking the time to look at the route. I have amended the route to take into account you comments. I am reluctant to use tow paths unless they are recommended, as some can be hard work.

Hi
See my route from the M56, North through to Standish on the A49. I have ridden this and find it much better than the ride up through Warrington and Wigan. At first you are heading due West but soon turn North again. This is a much more rural route than staying with the A49 and it avoids Haydock Island on the A580 as you arrive there further West.
Are you using a GPS for route finding?

Garmin Edge 800, still not got it work exactly as I want, but I am happy with loading tracks and following them.
I like the look of your route, skirting Warrington and Wigan, I will modify the route tonight.
Thank you.

Me again
See my Route from Euxton (Exton) to Broughton on the A6 north of Preston. From the park in Preston just follow the Cycle Route 6 signs to the A6 / A59 Junction North Road.
This Route avoids the industrial estate and works car parks further East on the Cycle Route into Preston from Bamber Bridge.
