Cycling in Bristol city centre

Post by LaStradaGiusta »

Can anyone help me with a route from Temple Meads station to VOSA's office in Croydon Street (BS5 0DA)?

I thought it would be easy to figure out a route from Multimap but I'm being hindered by ugly-looking major roads, sudden dead ends and one-way streets going the wrong way!

Desperately in need of some local knowledge; if anyone can help me, it would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Bristol is an absolute nightmare to cycle through if using the roads (as we obviously would) and you don’t know where you’re going. I added about 4 or 5 miles when cycling straight through when following road signs. They send you all over the place.

However, I understand there are some excellent cycle routes (though some are shared use with the pedestrians) which will cut your mileage significantly.

Sorry Matt mate, I ain’t got a clue where they are so can’t help on routes!

However, if you’ve got time you could contact Bristol City Council and ask for their walking/cycle map. Failing that, the map should be available from Tourist Information when you get there.

Good call. Just spoke to a lovely girl at BCC's Transport Planning team who promised to send out relevant maps by first class post, free of charge!

Living in Birmingham, this is not the sort of service I'm used to from councils ;-)

Look at the location on Multimap again. Change your view from street map mode to Ordnance Survey Landranger mode (hover your mouse pointer over the "Map" button and click on the fragment of OS map that appears next to it). Now you'll see a green dotted line running all the way from Temple Meads, practically past the front door of your destination.

That line is the Bristol-Bath bike path (with Temple Meads branch). While it's not necessarily the way an experienced local cyclist would go, it's pretty well signposted so it's probably your easiest solution.

Excellent, that is pretty well a direct route. Thanks for the tip!

You might try contacting the local cycling charity - 'Life Cycle'. They'll show up on a Google search.

The Bristol-Bath path runs from near TM (it's signposted from the station), out of Bristol via the Easton district, where, I think, from memory, the VOSA office (or one of them) is located. If you're going there, take a VERY good lock!!

Good luck,

I have a copy of the map they're sending you - I think you'll find it has what you need. I work in the environment section at BCC, so good to hear we have a satisfied customer!

The maps arrived on Saturday and yes, they're perfect. My thanks again to Melanie and the BCC Transport/Planning team. Proper job!
