touring Deutches Limes next week
Does anyone know how the floods in Germany on Rhine and Danube are affecting cycle touring?
Re: touring Deutches Limes next week
I'm in Baden Baden this week where it is warm, sunny with clouds.
German TV shows big floods around the Elbe (Launenburg) & the high water peak moving north west.
Big input from Red Cross disater teams

Nice trip.

The Limes don't really follow the Rhein as they head south east towards Frankfurt from the Neuweid area then it takes a big loop through Hesse before meeting the Main at Hanau. Once it leaves the Main @ Miltenberg it is away from major rivers all the way to the Danube at Kelheim.
I've ridden big chunks of the north end and central bits of the route, there are some good bits and some hard bits - plenty of unsurfaced tracks which could be a bit muddy if wet. Saalburg is a must stop and its worth a short side trip to Glauberg (http://www.glauberg.de/) for the Celtic centre before you reach Limeshain. Some of the 'sites' take some finding, several times i've ended up with a field with an information board - so don't be too disapointed. There are some excellent reconstructions at Lorch for example - trying to fit everything in might be the biggest issue!
