Hilleberg nallo 2gt footprint

Post by JoeDan »

hello everyone!
made a bit of an impulse purchase and bought a nallo 2gt tent of ebay, got it new for £350 so pretty happy with that. my question is,should i invest in a nallo footprint? do they really offer alot more protection? or rather than spend £80 is there something else i can use?
thanks

A Hilleberg groundsheet will last at least ten years and you can then send the inner back to Hilleberg and have them fit a new groundsheet for around £100 and get another ten years from it.
So, a footprint is not really necessary. But, they are also supposed to reduce condensation by blocking ground evaporation in the vestibule area overnight which might be a consideration.
Many people use Tyvek sheeting as a cheaper alternative footprint material, its a waterproof breathable fabric used in the building trade. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tyvek-43gm-1524 ... m_sbs_kh_3 you'd have to cut and join it to size for your tent.

I have used Hilleberg tents for many years including the Nallo GT. I have always used a footprint it makes camping so much better giving extra protection to inner floor and a nice floor covering for the vestibule . Left attached to the tent it can be rolled up in one and actually makes packing the tent easier (something that is not mentioned in the blurb).
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

I really like the Hilleberg foot prints. They remain attached to the tent so the whole thing can go up as a single unit, they make the porch so much more usable when the ground is wet and as suggested they can reduce condensation. Well worth it IMHO.

We have a Kaitum we use for cycle touring. We have a footprint for it but are quite selective in use, typically not bothering when on the bikes. Having spent all that money on a relatively low-bulk, low-weight tent it seems a shame to add to both weight and bulk by adding another groundsheet under an already tough one.

We use it if we're camping out of the car or the boats, where weight and bulk are a non-issue, but on the bike we'll not bother unless we've reason to expect particularly rough ground. The basic "red label" Hille groundsheet is a pretty serious item and you'll need a lot of use to trouble it too much as long as you take reasonable care.

So personally I wouldn't particularly recommend one if you're toting it by foot or bike, and you certainly don't need one.

In favour of footprints - they do give you a nice clean dry patch to pack your tent up. As with other tents that have separate footprints it is nice to be able to have a dry patch to roll the tent up, when surrounded by wet grass.

Without the footprint... get overthing over the sewn-in groundsheet, fold that over so you have a tent between groundsheet at the top and bottom that encloses everything, and then roll or fold or whatever from there. Yes, you have a damp groundsheet, but is that really worse than a damp footprint?

I have the footprint for my nallo 2 GT and wouldn't be without it. The main advantage for me is it provides a nice dry floor in the porch.

The main difference is that the footprint is a separate detachable item - so you roll your tent up as you describe - but the footprint stays on the ground. Nice dry tent into the bag - fold up footprint removing slugs and other wildlife ! and put it in its own little bag.
