I am a new lister from Australia seeking information on what has been described as a bicycle tour of Yate and or Iron Acton in Gloucester Shire, west of Chipping Sodbury. The ride involves one or more stops at 'historic landmarks ... contact, map, brochure or other information greatly appreciated.

Hello,
The area you are talking of is approx 7 miles from where I live at the present time. I do not know of an intereseting or historical ride of the area. Its actually a large modern housing Estate! You can get a map of the area for cyclists from South Gloucestershire Council via the internet I recall.
Sorry but I suppose any little helps.
John.

Yate Council's website mentions a leaflet called "Time Travel", that
contains information on two 20 mile circular rides centred around Yate. It invites the cyclist to pedal back in time through the historic countryside of the Frome Vale..
The
Tourist Information Centre would probably be happy to provide you with a copy.

There is an organisation called "Sustrans" that is an umbrella organisation running the National Cycle Network.
There are sevaral free (I don't know if that will include p&p to Australia!) route maps that you can build from:
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=FPR11
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=FPL01
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=FPR05
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=FPR09
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=FPT11
There are also a couple of books that you have to pay for:
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=RBH10
http://www.sustransshop.co.uk/index.php ... hp&p=RBW02
Finally if you look atthe mapping on his page, you can design routes from the network:
http://www.sustrans.org/default.asp?cou ... 0921346000
This will give you links to some of the above, as well as local groups, sites and advice
This is a wonderful area - enjoy

Hi Peter,
Don't know whether this route is available online. I've got an old copy somewhere, going back to when I used to live in North Somerset.

I don't know the Yate area very well, but, as John has commented, it's mostly a huge sprawl of housing estates, thrown up in the 90s.
Good luck,
Nigel

May be worth looking at the Avon Cycleway - it goes near to Yate & through Iron Acton.

You can use that route all the way to Bath. Or if your feeling fit, cycle to Saltford on the Bath route and follow the South of Bristol loop which will take you back to Yate via Blagdon, Chew, Wrington, Nailsea, Clevedon, Pill, the M5 bridge and Thornbury. The south bit including getting back into Bristol was 70 miles (I got lost). I did it on a fixed gear, very pleasent.
