All,

I draw your attention to todays article in the East Anglian Daily Times http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/essex_dramatic_rise_in_the_number_of_serious_cycling_road_accidents_1_2259636

Some simply astounding comments from councillor Rodney Bass, who is cabinet member for highways and transportation and chairman of the Essex Casualty Reduction Board.

I am not surprised. Living in the South of the County I can attest to the dangerous behaviour of a small minority of drivers; some deliberate intimidation, but much of it pure inattention or incompetence. In fact I note that only 1 of my daily evening rides in June was incident free !

Cllr Bass is largely parrotting the Highway Code. I suspect he isn't a cyclist.

Did he really suggest wearing a hard hat?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

I hope not. They're not well ventilated and not even remotely aerodynamic...

Cllr Bass prefers this headline http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/local_n ... ince_2005/ which made many of the local papers.

He wasn't popular with cycle campaigners in his last stint in Highways and Transportation until 2007(?). IIRC, he oversaw banning cyclists on the new A130 and A120 routes, among other things.
