Cleats and Clips and shiny things...

Post by deformedpenguinbar »

I'm a keen cyclist, and want to be as well set up on my bike as possible, but I suffer from stupidly large feet- size 15 at last measurement.

This makes it impossible to get cycling shoes for less than about £400 (and I'm not that keen), so I wonder what the options are for making my own pair? I've never use cleats before, but would it be possible to fit a pair to some normal shoes (I don't mind mangling some football boots to make something workable), or do the shoes definitely need to be specially made?

Thanks,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,
Good question - DIY bike shoes!

The trouble you may find is that the clips are not flat on the shoe mating surface. Mine a curved to fit the sole. I don't know if football boots have the same profile.

My cleats are quite large, being a road fitting, but I think there are smaller cleats on the market. No doubt someone will come in shortly and suggest a set!

Also, they'll have to be fitted. Cleats are bolted to the solid sole in specially designed holes. You'd have to find some other way to secure them.

I'm just giving you problems here, not solutions. Sorry.

How's about giving up on cleats, and using a flat pedal and straps? You'll find your options will be greater, and you wouldn't have to secure anything to the shoe.

Sounds like a good plan, though I haven't yet managed to find a cage which my shoes actually fit into... I'll have to carry on looking.

Re the cleats, I don't really mind carving up an old pair of shoes in order to get it to fit- if taking a chunk out of the sole is all that's required, I'm happy to do so.

Thanks for the advice,

Jamie

Once upon a time cheap rugby boots used to be a handy winter item.

I don't know what size 15 is in continental sizing, Sidi dominator goes up size 52. Cost from Chain Reaction £109.
I need 49 and thought I had real problems
