One Seriously Mean "Touring" Setup

Post by Aushiker »

Not sure if this belongs here or in touring but it looks like a seriously mean setup ... the trailer is an Extrawheel Voyager BTW.

I don't get Extra wheels. If you are going to tow a trailer tow a trailer that can hold more than the contents of two pannier bags. The last time I went any distance loaded up was with a Trice Explorer with a Streamer fairing, carrying Radical Designs side pod bags and towing a the Radical Designs trailer. This was over ten years ago and I don't have any pictures now.

I getit for a bike where you might be doing some single track work, or bad roads (e.g.african bad).

Can't see the point behind quite such a race machine, nor a kett...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

That first setup must be interesting in any measure of crosswinds! Three disc wheels?

Meh - I can see advantages to having only one set of spares required, and not everyone needs the fill capacity of a Yak.

Horses, Courses...

I am biased, I sold a BOB Ibex and brought an Extrawheel and I am very happy with it. I currently tow it behind my Surly Long Haul Trucker at times and my Giant XTC 2 mountain bike at times too (well for two weeks in fact from tomorrow as I am off on the Munda Biddi Trail for a 700 km ride).

My last big trip was with it behind the Surly. At one stage I had to carry five days of water and 20 days of food ... worked fine with the six panniers. Plus it tows sweet, particularly on the dirt and I only need one tube size, one tyre size ...

I bought an Extra Wheel to tow behind my DF bike, but I got the one with a 26" wheel and the nets on both sides and waterproof yellow bags to put stuff into. The nets allow for bigger stuff to be carried (once I was able to break a df bike down and carry it in the trailer. I haven't had the need to attach it to my 'bent yet. This means that I will have to carry 3 spare tires and tubes if I do ever conncet it up and go out for a ride.

That is the early model, now replaced by the Voyager which uses panniers. Can you not simply switch out your wheel in the trailer? That is one of the cool features of the Extrawheel Voyager at least. I run 700c and 26" wheels and could easily go down or fatter too.
