Southwark Bridge
Southwark Bridge
hi there, new to this forum. im in the process of planning a route to work which involes going over southwark bridge. im intending to use the short link between southwark bridge (north side) and queen st. does anybody currently do this and if so, can the link be used when travelling north and south at the junction to southwark brifge and are there any handy tips on accessing it, i.e road poisition/difficulties? ill be hoping to continue on and use king st, gresham st, wood st, moor lane etc so if anyone has any advice and know whether any of these are just one way that would be most helpful. thank you!

Re: Southwark Bridge
On Southwark Bridge itself there's a protected cycleway on both sides. The irony is that there's a horrible accident blackspot at the northern end. Two people have been killed by HGVs turning left onto the bridge from Thames Street.
I haven't ridden that route in a while, but a while ago the City turned that bit of queen Street into a traffic-free area with pedestrian seating etc. SFAIK you can cycle it, but don't go tanking through. There's a button for the traffic lights on the left at the junction.

Re: Southwark Bridge
There are demolition /building works in a block bounded by Queen Victoria Street to the North, Cannon Street to the South and Queen Street to the West. (It almost looks like they're rebuilding the Temple of Mithras which would be cool but no.)
Queen Victoria Street is now blocked off eastbound - traffic diverted up Queen Street and round Cheapside. So beware of additional traffic on that last section.
Access from the still-a-road bit of Queen Street to the traffic-free section of Queen Street is also officially closed off, and you can walk the junction if you prefer not to follow the pedlalling hordes. Just like andymiller says above, don't go tanking it - it's busy with people going back to Cannon Street station, plus there's a popular pub along it.
Edited to add - the rest of your route sound fine, btw. Nothing comes to my mind as problematic.

Re: Southwark Bridge
From the south, Southwark Bridge has the steepest approach of all London Thames bridges, so I was told. Certainly back in the day after a w/e of club riding/racing/beer drinking it seemed b-------- steep on a monday morning!
