British Eagle Touristique

Post by pete75 »

Does anyone know much about these? Couple of months ago I bought one on ebay – little used, 531 ST frame with all the braze ons you could ever need and fitted with good quality components. What’s more they’re what I’d call touring components like a Stronglight chainset which I converted from double to triple with £24 worth of parts from Spa. Other than a service, fitting my trusty B17 and changing the rather elderly tyres for Vittoria Randonneur Cross I’ve done nothing else to it.
It seems a fine bike to ride, lively and yet no wobbles even at 45 mph downhill loaded front and rear with camping gear. Ridden luggage free it feels more like a 1970’s road bike than a tourer.
In many ways it seems my ideal machine and I can’t understand why they’re so obscure other than the lack of a “famous” name.

I replied to one of the threads (as wotnogears - now expired).

On ebay last week there was a 1986 magazine supplement for sale about this marque, which I bought. Haven't received it yet but if it throws any further light on the subject I'll report back.

The turn of speed my Touristique has compared to my other tourer still surprises me!

Yer, these were one of the OK tourers that were around until the late 80's I guess. You still see a few about.

Basically a falcon bike a I think. They owned Townsend, Brit Eagle and Coventry Eagle. You can pick them up relatively cheaply now, but nice frame.

Thanks.

I'd be very interested to hear what they have to say...
