back to the point, footpaths are for pedestrians. so dont cycle there which often means that some cycle lanes are actually useless. I've got some round my place of abode, it's so annoying that my taxes are been wasted on such schemes that have no benefit to me but if you ignore them then sure enough some car driver abuses you for been in their way. string up the highways staff responsible I say.

Troy - I admire your attitude - a bit - but police are employed to apply the law - which sometimes means applying a science which is far from exact ! At the end of the day the court will decide whether thier interpretation and application was correct. I would bet on the trained official rather than the ideological rantings of the paranoid oppressed everytime.

I'd refuse point blank. The copper is exceeding his authority, & if he wants to argue I'll be after the Chief Constable & anyone else who can make his life a misery.

I would debate that, I think uphold the law is more accurate than apply, as that includes more of the courts job of punishment after the crime rather than trying to prevent the crime by whatever means but anyway who you calling the ideological ranting paranoid oppressed ?

Oh a debate.... ok.
Police do apply the law and I grant you uphold it as well.
But there is a lot of grey when you mix black and white, things are not always clear cut on the street - just look how Lawyers ( I detest those creatures ) muddy the waters when a case comes to court.

But when dealing with an incident plod have the law as thier toolkit. A bit like a carpenter or mechanic or a cook.
And they will apply the law to achieve the most reasonable outcome in any given set of circumstances. As they see fit.

They might not get it exactly right as by the rule book EVERY time, but on balance I would sooner have the human element than ED 209 any day of the week.

Did I really call you that ?
sorry !

As well as a cyclist I also drive a car. I was driving my car one fine and sunny morning turning left to join a main road..I looked both right and left...nothing coming so I emerged...there was an almight bang and a bike rider landed on the bonnet of my car..he had been in a blind spot behind my door pillar and of course I didn't see him..It's not that I was negligent or knowingly pulled out in front of him..it was a complete accident...So the next time you are driving your car remember about blind spots around your vehicle

Course you weren't negligent. How could you be expected to see him what with the door pillar being in the way.

Recently I saw a car pulling slowly out of a T juntion into the path of a Motorcycle, both vehicles where going slowly at the time, the car driver did not seem to see the bike at all.
A few vehicles passed by and the car moved forward again but the driver still did not see the bike, in the end the motorcyclist had to stop in the middle of the road and sound his horn to avoid the car pulling out on him. I belive some drivers just dont see the bikes, perhaps because they don't expect them to be there among the traffic, they are only looking for other car's.

Then there's the guy I encountered this week. Pulled out of a junction on the right ahead of me, and drove down the wrong side of the road straight at me! He was too busy looking to make sure he stopped (double parked) right outside the newsagents so he had the minimum distance to walk to but his morning comic. Fortunately he stopped just before he got me, but if I hadn't braked hard he would have gone right over me.
When he got out I asked him if he had seen me. He offered to beat me up.

erm how about this for a idea, when looking mentally consider all the road to be like a plate of tasty chocolate sponge cake and that your job is with your eyes to eat every bit of it and not just a narrow car width section of it in the middle. so if theres a obstruction you automatically move. you can tell the experienced truck/van driver from the idiot at slanted junctions because they square their vehicle up on final approach so they can see, the average idiot car driver just lines up with the road and so has to look through the rear windows or ask their passenger.
