Replacing gear cables

Post by awparker »

I am trying to replace the gear cables on a friend's bike and need some advice regarding accessing the cable end in the gear shifter.

Both shifters are marked "Shimano V brakes" and have the brake lever and then two gear levers (one shifts up, one shifts down) in the same housing. Replacing the brake cable has not been a problem.

On the top of the mechanism is a small plastic cover held on by two screws. Is this what I need to remove to replace the cable? I am just a little concerned in case there are a number of small parts etc which spring out of place and defy return. It is not my bike and the workplace is dark and dusty!

I hope I have made myself clear. Any advice welcomed.

this may be of some help instruction sheet
select the groupset, then the lever and then the instruction sheet.

Thank you for these replies. Having looked at the websites I feel a bit more confident in starting the job by removing the covers
