After a new bike

Post by Neil from Fife »

Hi I'm thinking of getting a new bike and doing a major upgrade as I'm willing to spend about £2000. My local bike shop offers an excellent bike fitting service and basically build the bike to suit you. however they really push Orbea bikes and the one I have my eye on is the Orca s105. I have looked at other bikes and found better specced bikes for the money. However the thought of buying a bike built to suit me rather than buy an off the peg bike is very appealing. what are peoples thoughts on Orbea bikes as I want to make sure they are decent bikes.

If you want a bike built for you, try bob jackson, brian rourke, mercian, roberts, ellis briggs, enigma. You could have a decent bike built by any of them for you for around 2k (including a frame made for YOU).

If you want the carbon route, I would just buy of the net. Don't fool yourself into it being made for you, they are just components picked up off a shelf and attached, same as the ones on the net.

EDIT: Also if a shop is pushing you to buy one make, they are not working for you!

Thanks for that. Taking in what you say I'm now considering the Boardman Team Carbon bike at £1300 as the components are basically the same as the orca at £1000 more. Only problem is the bad press that Boardman bikes get.

Actually Boardmans get good press. It's Halfords that get the bad press.

Sorry thats what I meant. Though just reading a few posts in this forum seems to indicate a problem with Team Carbon bikes.

The Cannondale Synapse Tiagra is selling for around £1200.

My uncle let me have a spin on his the other week and if I had the money and hadn't just bought a new Giant Defy I would buy it in a heartbeat!

On that note, i'm very happy with my Giant Defy and they have compsoite versions of the Defy in your price range which are also pretty good.
