Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
HAs anyone got a Surley LHT with a Roloff hub? What's it like / would you recommend the set-up? I am looking to buy a world tourer and am very tempted by the Thorn Nomad but wonder if there is a cheaper and lighter alternative. Any advice appreciated.

You could also look into the croix de fer, Vin Cox did round the world on one with an alfine 11 hub, guess it should do alright then.

except the Alfine 11 wasn't out when he went round the world.
Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
Just checked, you are right. He ran an alfine 8.
Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
Pity they have had to us a chain-tensioner on the Surly. I would have thought that they would have tried to avoid that.
Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
I've seen this said a number of places but I'm not sure I understand the problem. A chain tensioner seems a much more elegant solution when compared to an EBB or sliding dropouts. So what is the issue with chain tensioners?

Another thing to go wrong and get bashed like a derailleur. EBBs are great, easy to adjust and very hard to damage.

For a world tourer I'd not put weight high on my list of criteria as your luggage choices will cancel out differences. Strength, reliability and comfort are key. The Surly's a good bike but the Thorn is designed for the rohloff.
Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
Sorry, what are EEB's?

EBB eccentric bottom bracket

Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
I have no personal experience, but from threads on here it may be worth looking at the Surly Ogre.
Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
Is it possible to get a chain tensioner that perhaps sits on the chainstay and pulls up??

Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
There are some interesting observations on other Surly bikes with Rohloffs on this website: http://www.whileoutriding.com/
For example the troll: http://www.whileoutriding.com/gear-revi ... -dirt-road
And the Ogre here: http://www.whileoutriding.com/bike
My experience with an Ogre for touring has not been great as it doesn't seem to like too much weight on the front. I have thought of moving all the bits onto another frame but as it has 29er wheels the choice is limited as I also want to keep disc brakes and of course the Rohloff. I also don't want to get rid of the 29er wheels as they have so far proved bomb proof and replacing them with 26" ones will cost money. An LHT Disc in the larger frame size would fit the bill but I would need to test one first to see if it could be made to fit me as I am only a shade over 5'-9". The other option is of course just to carry less stuff and this is the way I will go in the short term at least once I have had a frame bag made.

Re: Surley LHT with Roloff Hub
I like the sliding dropout solution for Rohloff, but I've never done a world tour with one so I don't know if there are issues with it. Aesthetically I much prefer bikes without tensioners, but then we're talking about a bike with large tyres and panniers hanging off all available points, so we're not talking about beautiful clean lines.
What dropout/EBB did Mark Beaumont's Rohloff Koga use?
