Cycling quotes
Cycling quotes
I received a card on my birthday with the following quote on it by H G Wells.
"When I see an adult on a bicycle I do not despair for the human race"
Has anyone out there got any cycling quotes to add to this thread?

Some recent pedalable joys
"you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who nearly are half people and half bicycles"

Great link - I think this one is my favourite:
Government must help to eliminate cars so that bicycles can help to eliminate government. ~ Advocacy slogan in Holland

Re: Cycling quotes
"Fifteen to twenty kilometers pedaling a bicycle is a small matter for a teacher. What’s hard is teaching, swallowing the bitter taste of the miseducation which parents have given their children."
- Pramoedya Ananta Toer, It's Not an All Night Fair. At the beginning of the last century in Indonesia, teachers pedalled from school to school.
In other novels, Pramoedya also notes the tremendous influence the bicycle had on making Indonesia uncomfortable for its Dutch masters. Before it was introduced, union organizers and other "undesirables" were limited to travel by foot and could easily be overhauled by mounted police even when they had a day's head-start. Once they had bikes they could reach other villages quickly and be in hiding before the bully boys were out. He considered bicycles the beginning of real freedom movements, and had a wry grin at the fact that most of them were Dutch.

Re: Cycling quotes
My favourite quote, from Mark Twain; Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.
Re: Cycling quotes
This one has always been a favourite with me:
When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me. ~ Emo Philips

"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." James E. Starrs
Re: Cycling quotes
My favourite quote, I think is by Bishop Desmont Tutu,
"Give a man a fish, he has a meal.
Teach a man to fish, he can become self sufficient.
Teach a man to ride a bike, he'll think fishing is boring"

"To prepare for a race there is nothing better than a good pheasant, some champagne and a woman."

“Riding a bicycle makes you impotent. That’s why I carry a bicycle seat in my pocket—because it’s better than wearing a condom. ”
― Jarod Kintz, The Merits of Marthaism, and How Being Named Susan Can Benefit You
But it obviously didn't apply to Anquetil

Who doubtless said so in the hope that everyone else would turn up at the line knackered.

I was aware of his reputation but not of that particular episode. Thanks.
