SP dynamo hub direction.

Post by fossala »

OK, looking at the PDF http://www.sp-dynamo.com/8-series-pic/c ... lation.pdf the hub should have the connecter on the right when the arrows rotate forward. Mine has it on the left.
Should I; send it back, run it so the connecter is on the left, have the arrows run backwards. I've built the wheel up before I noticed, it seems to spin the same both ways.

Just a thought, the insides couldn't be backwards could it? In that case I should just throw in on the right.

normally the specified rotation direction on a hub generator is because there is a theoretical risk of the innards unscrewing themselves if the device is run backwards for a long time. I don't know how real this risk is with this model of hub generator.

So are you saying yours doesn't look like this?

Yup, the arrows are facing the wrong way when the "connection" is on the right. I guess it must just be the shell put on backwords. But then again, if it is the the wheel might not be as strong due to dishing... I bought it from sjscycles but I have already built it into the wheel before I noticed it.

It's normal to have the connectors on the right, and this is required on disc brake versions because the disc is almost universally on the left.
It doesn't actually matter which way round non-disc SP hubs are put in (or at least the non-switchable ones) because they open up by splitting the hub shell in two rather than unscrewing one end.
I'd guess the band with the arrows on got put on backwards.

SJS says it's all the right way round, they just sometimes lazer it on backwards.

I trust they've offered you a partial refund on account of the lazy lazering, given that it's more than a cosmetic matter when you have to deliberately disregard safety advice. Makes the bike hard to sell on at a later date at least.
