Chainring - which way round?

I've just bought three new chainrings and the inner one (a Stronglight) has a chamfer on one side of the teeth. Should the chamfer face in towards the bike, or out towards the middle chainring?

For Stronglight, if it's an alloy ring, engraving outboard, bolt heads in countersunk sides of holes. If steel I dont think it matters

There's two trains of thought on this, chamfer facing outward helps the chain engage from the middle ring when changing down.
Chamfer facing inward helps the chain peel off the inner ring when changing up onto the middle ring.
FWIW,when my
steel Stronglight inner rings show signs of wear I turn them round,as Woolie says Alu rings should only fit one way

Thanks guys - chamfer side in then, with the option to swap round to resolve shifting of wear problems. And yes, it is a steel ring as it's only 22t.
