Sorry about the snafu with the pictures. Looks like the host went down. I'll get round to fixing that a little later.

Hi,

First, sorry for not responding earlier. Frankly, I found the number of replies intimidating! So many people to reply to…

But, I did read through, and I followed it up with a chat with a local bike shop, and I think the best thing to do in this case is simply to buy a more appropriate rack. I wasn't happy with the way my panniers sat on it, so this kills two birds with one stone. It was a basic model, and I reckon I can get something decent for it online, so it's not a big hassle.

This one at £15 from EBC is good and comes with a light fitting.

Why not buy it from the bike shop as s/he took the time to set you right?
