Another Shimergo question - help

Post by Jimstar79 »

Hi all,

I am currently trying to get a Shimergo combination working on my old Scott road bike. I bought Campag shifter years ago before I heard of Microshift.

I've got Mirage 10spd shifters, a shimano 105 RD and FD, a brand new 9spd shimano chain, and I have found that I need to replace the old 9spd cassette (it's middle sprockets are shot).

I've found an Ultegra 6500 9spd over at Chainreaction and am just wondering if any one over here has any experience of this working with Shimergo? Could I just go with a cheaper alternative, the Tiagra HG50?

I'd really appreciate any help and advice on this, as I have been working on this bike over most of summer and would like to ride 'her' at least once this year before the bad weather comes in!

Thanks in advance!

I'm running Veloce 10 speed levers, 105 rear dérailleur and Tiagra 9 speed cassette. The setup works well.
It doesn't matter which model of Shimano 9 speed cassette you use, the sprocket spacing is identical on all.

Thank you for replying, Pete!

See, this last couple of weeks I've been thinking that it was the Shimergo set up that was at fault - missing a whole load of gears. I was going to get some Microshifts to solve it once and for all BUT then, after indexing the RD properly and seeing that the chain line looked really good - even on the gears it skipped - it dawned on me to inspect the cassette - and sure enough, that looks like the problem!

Until I am 100% sure the indexing is working I am not going to spend more than necessary. I actually think I am going to just go for the Tiagra 9 spd to save on money - an upgrade can come later on!

Thanks again :)

It was this vital piece of info that sealed it for me.

Thanks again

I don't know what effect the mech would have but you could in theory go 10 speed by using Ambrosio cassettes which have Shimano splines to fit their hubs but Campag spacings. Adding a Campag rear mech wouldn't cost much if you wanted to.
The 105 mech might not be co-operative. I have not tried that particular model.

new chains will nearly always skip on worn sprockets; if you change the chain when it has worn by ~0.5% (certainly no more than 0.75% ) then you can usually fit a new chain on the old sprockets; let it go longer than that and it'll skip....mainly on your favourite sprckets, of course...

No point in going spendy with cassettes; cheaper shimano ones seem to work just as well as more expensive varieties.

cheers

Campag 10 speed rear shifters have the same cable pull as Shimano 8 speed. This is the ideal match for the best shifting and component life (This is not that others will not work but the ideal).

Campag front shifters pull more cable than Shimano road shifters, so you may find the lever heavy or stiff to shift. The ideal is a Campag front mech but Some Shimano MTB front mechs work well. I use Shimano Alivio mechs as the return spring in these would seem to be not as strong as the more expensive ones.

I never thought of that! I changed the chain to a new one, but when I think about it the one I took off the bike wasn't very old at all and it doesn't look like it has 'stretched' very much compared to the new one.

I've decided to go with the 12-17 cassette, as it is very hilly where I live. It should be here tomorrow and, fingers crossed, my Shimergo project will be a success!

Still time to make the Tour of Britain

I'll and let you guys know how it all goes.

Thanks for the photo, Pete. Which dérailleur is that - your 105?

That's about the only thing I've got right so far!!

I would use whatever front mech you have and see what happens. I have used all sorts of things and they all do the job. As there is plenty of trim you can get away with a lot. I have bought several Record front mechs from Ebay for a fiver. They are dead sweet, even on a triple.

I am delighted to inform you that the Shimergo now works perfectly after adding a new chain and a new cassette (9spd Tiagra).

My setup currently is:

Campagnolo Mirage 10spd shifters

Shimano 105 front and 9 speed rear derailleur

Shimano Tiagra 9spd cassette

Shimano HG93 chain

and one happy rider!!

Thanks to all for your advice and help - especially Pete75!!
