Oh thats a sad bit of news. I am reading "Fat Man on a Bicycle" at the moment.

I liked this bit...... "It is very difficult to know how to behave on London roads with a bicycle. A few cyclists are quite po-faced about the highway code: most are like me, and take a certain amount of licence; others ride like the Battle of Britain." pg 45

He then goes on -

LONDON HIGHWAY CODE FOR THE ADVENTUROUS CYCLIST

How to behave at traffic lights:

GREEN : Go straight through.
AMBER : Go straight through, rather faster.
RED : Go straight through, looking to right and left.

also... On lighting your bicycle - Try to ride under street lamps wherever possible!

His books are great reading, sad to hear this news.

That's sad. I read one of his first articles long, long ago, can't remember when. It involved unpleasant experiences cycling in the Pennines with a bunch of mates. I wouldn't call it an inspiration because I didn't return to cycling for years after, but (looking down at my gut) I remembered the article on quite a few rides thereafter.

RIP. I have an awful confession to make: I've had FMoaB somewhere on my bookshelves for years, I think, but haven't read it. Must look it out. Although he has now passed on, Tom Vernon I think gives the lie to the adage that fat = unfit. He lived to 74 - not a great age but not a premature death. If you look after yourself in other ways, such as by plenty of exercise including cycling, the waistline doesn't matter so much.

I'm guessing here but I believe in the mantra. If I didn't, I'd be very worried about my own BMI...

RIP, sad news, loved his books and his humour. We could do with with more like him, makes such a change from shrink wrapped space muppets.

The quote of his I like the most is "remember a bicycle is for stopping"
