Also the claimed weight (1980g for a 56cm) is way off, mine is the smallest 50cm size and frame only weighed in at 2159g....

The chainstay clipping is disappointing (the Q is low, but no lower than a load of older chainsets), is there anything odd about the chainstays? I note with interest that a lot of modern road frames (130mm OLN) have curved chainstays, and maybe it is actually a necessity if you are running 135mm OLN with a road chainline...?

The weight discrepancy is disgraceful. That is like having an extra set of seat stays.

cheers

The heel clipping is very minor mind you, normally when pedalling there is no problem and I don't even notice. I only noticed when I saw a few marks on the chainstays, not sure when exactly it's been happening but I havent put enough miles on it yet to be sure.

The clearance between the inside face of the crank and the chainstay is about 8mm or so, so there is still a bit of room. Still I also don't think it would have been a bad idea to curve the chainstays in at that point anyway as there is plenty of room behind it. Nothing odd about them at all, if anything the clearance seems pretty normal and the chainstay shape is pretty standard.

Yes, the weight discrepancy is disappointing. Although 2.1kg for a steel frame isn't bad I was expecting it to be sub 2.0kg, particularly for my small frame size.

Ach its all down to frame size and what they consider *average frame weight. I used to ride a 90's Super Galaxy which was easy 3kg - never felt it, not once. Especially when packing 30kg of bags to the continent ;)

Manufacturers do it all the time, I always look at advertised weights and add 10%, which is usually where the truth lies...

Was the frame weighed without the forks?

The Genesis site quotes a separate weights for the frame & forks
Genesis wrote:Weight 5lbs 1oz / 1.98kg (56cm) / Fork - 2lbs 1oz / 0.93kg (Uncut)

why not read the earlier post?

-frame only, 50cm size, 2159g (vs claimed 1.98kg for a 56cm)

at that rate a 56cm frame would in reality be about another 100g heavier again.

This is not within the bounds of normal manufacturing variations. 1.98kg is clearly what scientists call 'a fib'.

cheers

Yep, they all fib. Checkout weightweenies.com, almost every single claimed manufacturers weight is 5-10% plus!

yeah I know what you mean, but sometimes it works out different to how you would expect. For example I was amused to see that PD-A520 are actually lighter in reality than advertised, presumably in order to make the PD-A600 pedals seem like better value than they actually are, or something....

cheers

Very pretty bike smut pedaller, drool! Definitely going to read your build blog

Especially interested in the details regarding the dynamo hub. I am only just beginning to explore and learn about bicycle parts, but the idea of charging things on longer adventures ,such as a GPS and headlight, using power generated with your own muscles, seems very interesting. Don't know if I am going to have the money to install a dynamo hub on my bike for 2014, but definitely something I am going to invest in at some point.

When manufacturers weigh frames, I'm sure they weigh it before the addons such as paint, bottle cage bossses or anything else they can leave off like welding or lugs......

There is no cycle to work scheme in Belgium but employers can - and do! - pay per mile for you to commute in, which slowly but surely a similar thing!

For me the CdF has a better frame and slightly better components, so if they cost the same money, then it wins hands down. Little things like the spread of gears on the rear cassette, in the scheme of things, are minor.

Yes have a look at the blog post http://smutpedaller.blogspot.com/2013/12/project-phil-part-1-frame.html Frame was measured with no fork, no headset or BB cups and it also scales were tared with the stem which supported the frame in the pic.
Only thing was that the water cage bottles were in, however I'm quite certain the bottle cage bolts wouldn't add up to 159g :P The fork weight however was spot on.
