mudguard support

That time of year again, thoughts turn to winter gear, the winter bike comes out only this year I,ve demoted my only "mudguard bike" to the turbo. My alternative,an old trek 2000,has rather close clearances,so after finding a solution on a US site I decided to try and make a support bridge which fixes at the brake as normal but extends an inch either side.I cut the mudguard and bolted each piece onto these wings.Seems to work well, anybody found a better solution? The bridge was made from a strip of stainless steel, about a half inch wide, cut from a sheet(scrapyard) with a jigsaw and drilled out.It needs to be thin enough to bend fairly easily, but thick enough to support the guard.Good luck!
