As a teenager, I discovered that I really enjoyed cycling, and bought my first 'proper' bike, because of rides out with my local YHA group. I remember that the call was "Oiler" (although to my untrained ear it could have been "Oil-up"), for cars approaching from either direction.

However, I'd like to digress a bit and pick up on something that Pompey Monkey and another said on the subject of communicating with others. In another context, last week a club member told me that something I had done was not permitted and I felt somewhat embarrassed by his roasting. In my work, I am learning that communicating with people is a skill in its own right which needs to be mastered, yet many just don't seem to have this skill. Perhaps the persons in this instance were in the wrong and it was appropriate to point out their error. However, we are all entitled to be treated with courtesy.

Yes, and unfortunately many internet forums (this is a delightful exception for the most part) seem to be the refuge of those who lack these skills.

It'd be nice to believe it were that simple but, looking at the postings on some cycling forums, not all those who ride cycles are imbued with the love of their fellow men, or indeed women :)

Many adult cyclsts are also members of "the motoring fraternity". Most motorists are not out to harm cyclists. False distinctions which deny these facts play into the hands of those who wish to marginalise cycling in the UK.

Alan - please note the  in my post.

Conversely of course, it's also true that............not all of those of the motoring fraternity are imbued with the love of their fellow men, or indeed women.
