bike shop say they broke.ratchet bad. since they used to click I assume they were in index mode. Can they be used in friction mode like how bike gears used to be...?

Parts being hard to come by and all, I just want to keep them on as spares if possible.

Hi
Did they just suddenly stop working or were you working on them at the time? If the latter my experience is that it was really easy to loose the indexing position and the instructions supplied with them did not tell you how to restore it. A Google search led me to these instructions:

"Remove or disconnect cable
Remove the lever and boss cover from shifter body
Install boss cover in correct orientation
Put lever in place on stud or "axle", but in the LOW position; that is, with the lever nearly parallel to the ground.
With either the screw in place or with your thumb & finger securely holding the lever against the boss cover, shift the lever to the HIGH position.
Repeat this action, if necessary, until the mechanism is restored to its original position. You'll know this when it won't rotate with gentle force.
Install the lever in the HIGH position and secure mounting screw. You should now be able to operate the barcon through the full range of indexing detents.
Re-install cable and adjust tension as necessary."

Which sorted out my problem. Of course if your bike shop is right this will not work.

well my bike shop just say its broke. I DO trust them  its just having to stomp up £54 for a new set isnt so hot and given their reputations for breaking when you sneeze near them I need a solution other than upgrading from 9 speed long term. So I'll go to the shop tomorrow and suggest that and see what they say. At the very least the left one still works so theres no reason that cant be salvaged and become the first item in my spares collection( soon to grow i'm sure).

They do break after a bit. Mine had maybe 15k miles on them. The plastic cover split and then the metal indexing internal ring broke in two and fell out. I was able to carry on in friction mode which is not really an ideal long term solution for a tandem.

Not sure I'd consider them particularly fragile, just that they do fail eventually.
