Best budget front light?

Post by jamesofyorkshire »

Any recommendations for a decent but reasonably-priced front light for commuting?

This seems to get a decent review. Anyone got one who can verify if it does what it says on the packet?

I have a Lezyne Hecto front light. Find it good for commuting on well lit roads before sunrise. Very bright head on and a good range of modes. I feel like I am seen with it

I sometimes pair it with a moon gem 2.0 (I think it's called). This is also a good light and had a good fit inducing strobe mode that seems to get the required attention.

Both available for under £30

Both these lights are USB chargeable

At risk of repeating the annual argument regarding the merits of conical beam lights (like the Smart you linked to) and those designed for on-road use, as a satisfied user of 2 Trelock 730s (old model) I would happily shell out 36 euro for one of these (delivered to the UK). 2 power levels, battery charge state and USB charging ;)

The spec on that lamp is 30 lux, and IIRC, that means the brightness of 30 candles at 1 meter distance.
That's not worth getting out of bed for.

I've a British Standard halogen cateye I think HL550 with a nicelite led bulb replacement. The cateye HL320 or its successor is a similar price and brightness but not as nice a beam shape. Both work out about £30.

You probably can't beat the German standard cirvit led lights from lidl but they're not sold all the time. Under £20 I think.

That's interesting.......I don't usually buy cycling stuff from Lidl....Aldi yes, but Lidl stuff doesn't seem as good. I'll keep an eye out for the lights though.

Lidl lights might only appear in their bike special offer sales, what, twice a year? Conversely, I've never got good bike stuff from aldi. I didn't like the looks of their lights last month. All nonstandard cheapies.

i've had cycling shorts and longs from Aldi from about 3 years ago....very comfy and long lasting. Got some new longs last year and they are very uncomfortable! Also jumper and 3 fleeces from a while back, and still going strong. Very impressed.

Also bought a waterproof jacket about 4 years ago.......it was better than my 60 quid one! Pretty much worn out now but has been used a LOT! Retailed at 7.99 but the following week they were brought down to £3.99..........can't beat that can you. Wish I'd got a couple more.

Gloves from 2/3 years ago also very good. Still in use.

Bought a floor pump from Aldi earlier this year. Rubbish.

All in all I'd say up until recently their (Crane) clothing was very good, and excellant value, but now Aldi stuff is not so good.....and not so cheap. They got their foot in the door with good value stuff, and now going downhill and no longer cheap. Just my opinion!

Their 'hiking' boots last about a week.........

30 lux is plenty bright enough with a decent lens/reflector

Hi,

If you just want to be seen the £1/99p shop specials are just fine, with a £1/99p pack
of AAA batteries. Same with the red rear. VFM wise both of them cannot be touched.

FWIW mount the front upside down under the handlebars, I've broken several
in persisting on mounting them on the top, they just break too easily for that.

Both lights are 5 LED's. Front square with one in the middle, rear a line.
Front is two speed flashing and continuous. 4 AAA's.
Rear is six flashing modes and continuous. 2 AAA's.

Dirt cheap but do the job. I leave them on my folder.

rgds, sreten.

I like the Bell lights, available from ASDA. I am however a believer in running two of them:

The Bell rear spider lights are good as well. Again, I run two of them.

Planet X Phaart lights are very bright and well built for the money.

Depends whether your commute is on lit or unlit roads. Also consider the run time you need from the batteries and if the bracket will fit your handlebars.
I have one but wouldn't use it as my main light on unlit roads but it would be ok on lit roads.
