tent/sleeping bag

Post by patpalloon »

I'm looking for some camping gear to go cycle touring next year. Anyone recommend a one-man tent and sleeping bag?

This will all depend on your budget and whether you can actually live in a one man tent! A lot of people here, myself included prefer 1/2 man tents for the extra living space. Sleeping bag choice will depend on where and when you are camping - Spain mid summer you'd most likely just need a 1 season lightweight bag, Norway in spring 4 season with liner and cover! :?
Convention? what's that then?

Sorry to be tedious, but it helps if you say what your budget is.

Basically (and simplifying hugely) £100 for a tent gets you something under 3kgs. £200 gets you under 2kg, and £300 gets you under 1kg.

Oh and where you are going - a bag that will be good for summer in southern Europe might not be warm enough for northern Europe.

Also there's lots of information on existing threads - you don't need to look very far down this page to see a number of related threads.

I went and bought a vango tempest 300 (3man) for camping (£110). Yup 3kg is a bit heavyish maybe for a tent(not much heavier than the 2man), but I can spread my sleeping bag and kit out all around the tent with room to spare. Not sure where to put the bath though...
Keeps the wind out a treat ...even 70mph winds :D I slept like a log last night on the south downs(It was my camping gear test, and went perfect). (Its my luxury heavy item, so i'm happy to put up with the weight). If youre not too fussed about wind theres always the banshee which is slightly cheaper... and alot lighter.

As for sleeping bags i wasn't too fussed and just bought one suitable for -2 deg C upwards(£40).

Whatever you choose, enjoy your camping!!!

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure what my budget is yet. I have done cycling touring staying at b and bs, but not camping before. Are there any good references on camping gear for cycling, apart from this forum of course!

Try borrowing some camping gear and going on a short trip in similar terrain and weather to your planned tour.
Maybe even have a camp overnight in the back garden!

You may be surprised just what you need and what you can leave behind, everyone is different, there is no perfect packing list except the one you have evolved after a few tours.

Give it a go it is great fun.

There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".
