Campagnolo 10 spd chain

Post by student »

So, yesterday I decided to clean, thereby I removed it. Came apart easily, but after washing when I wanted to reconnect the links, I've came across something:

1. when I pushed in the rivet the connected links "stiffened" up, became rigid.
2. When I pushed further the rivet, it came out bulging at the other side, though the rigidity vanished.
3. Got the chain apart again, pushed the rivet into place. The rivet seems to be in place, but it bulges out on the side farther away from the spokes than on that side which is beside the spokes..

The chain spins freely, there's not a stiff or rigid link in it, but the "misaligned" rivet worries me. Will it hold? or shall i take it to the LBS and ask them whether they can help with this problem somehow? (well, i don't have ideas.. I've used the same 3 quid chain tool on my shimano chains without problem, but this campy one gave me trouble)

chain is C10, possibly veloce.

Doesn't sound right. A quick and simple way to sort it out would be to get something like this

IIRC you are only meant to rejoin C10 chain using a special connector rivet. The special rivet replaces a standard rivet in the chain.

Refitting a standard rivet in the chain using a chain tool yields a weakened link that may fail in service.

I agree with the above post, a quicklink is a good solution here, especially if you intend to remove the chain for cleaning on a regular basis.

If you have a dodgy link, remove it and fit the quicklink there instead.

cheers

I got away with splitting and re-joining my Camapg 9sp chains, but there's no way I would even try it with a Campag 10sp chain.
The pins sit flush with the plates and are an interference fit. They MUST NOT be pushed back in.
When you get the chain new, take off the links to make it the correct length, and fit a Missing Link.

Buy these pronto.

Campag's instructions are to shorten the new chain and fit their special pin. From then on, they say NOT to split it again.

By using a Missing Link, you can take off the chain as many times as you want, so it's a fine solution and far better than leaving it on for life.

thank you for the replies.. The chain seems to be okay, though I haven't made any strenuous efforts with it since rejoining.

I'll pro'lly buy missing link from ebay, or some local place, as ribble shipping prices to continental EU are... :)

Thanks everyone for the input!

Plain dangerous in its current state. Likely to break on the first hill.

So might last for years without any problems, in Hungary!

not in the whole country, but definitely this part (north-east). A speedbump here qualifies as hill. : )

I've inquired from a buddy of mine who has 10s campy setup on all of his machines, and he told, that it shouldn't be an issue if the pin is in place. Nonetheless, I'll get some KMC missing links.
