I don't know how effective those things are but I can imagine the unintended consequences if you came across an unsympathetic police officer

There's a chap near me wears one regularly and I know from other cyclists he has fallen foul of unsympathetic officers who have given him a hard time.

I do cycle regularly with a chap who wears black leggings and a yellow jacket - nothing unusual for a London cyclist - but because he is also wearing a silver (could be white) helmet he really does look like the law at casual glance. It often catches me out even though I know he's my mate and we're out for a spin together but when I see a flash of black/yellow/white in my peripheral vision I often think it is plod.

There's a red cyclist?

Don't forget the approximately 8% of male drivers who (like me) are red-green colour-blind to some degree.

Dead straight.

In the far distance we saw a cyclist in bright orange. He stood out clearly against the leaden sky and the black tarmac. We were quite impressed.

Orange is even more visible that yellow and doesn't blend so easily with the yellows and greens of the countryside.

My wife wears one of those when riding her horse on the roads. She says it definately make people slow down, even though our local police force has disbanded its Mounted section, I think it's people's first reaction that it might be a police officer. I have a very bright Polaris RBS jacket, that has a similar effect on people.
