which used Audax style bike?
which used Audax style bike?
I'm considering buying an audax style bike and wonder what would I get for £400 on a good condition used one ?
The bike should have drop handlebars, be light (10kg), take mudguards and a pannier rack and take 28mm tyres.
Think I might prefer 2 chain wheels instead of 3 but not necessary.
Thank you for your help,
Alastair

My frames, seat posts and stems may weigh some more because I have big bikes but I dont think 10kg is that reasonable, certainly if you include racks, mudguards and lights.
I seem to recall my titanium bike was just under 10kg with the bare minimum legally required for its maiden test ride.
The weight is more a function of the components than the frame. Weight savings in lots of small and frequently expensive ways is needed throughout the component list.
Like two Rubino Pro tyres at 28mm for 500g or two Ultragator wired tyres at 700g? Both are common on any Audax ride.
Things like this bring it down below 10kg.

Thank you for all replies.
I saw this one, not sure of its weight and my fit. I'm 5'7" with 29/30" inside leg.
Saw this one too. Think too big, plus too far to collect.
10kg may be a bit optimistic , but that's without the rack. Idea is it should be a light bike.
Thanks, Alastair

Re: which used Audax style bike?
The only way you may get to that weight is something in aluminum or carbon.
At that price range it's likely to be s/h aluminum, something like the pinnacle range from Evans or Decanthlon b twin.

Not so - it's quite possible to get below 10kg with a steel frame.

Decide what you want and then be prepared to wait for the right one at the right price.
I did just this and after nearly a year of watching forums and bidding on ebay a got a very highly spec'ed (Dura-Ace & Royce components) Thorn Audax for £340 on ebay.

That is what I would like to do, but I need some advise as to the brand and model of bike to choose.

Re: which used Audax style bike?
Buying what you require for £400/2nd hand is do-able, but you'll probably have to wait a while. This is because this particular style (fitted mudguards/28mm tyres) is not particularly common. You also have to take into account waiting for the right size frame to turn up. And to be sure on that point, especially if you are buying 'remotely'. Don't be tempted by the 'nearly' fit sizes.
The most common model of the style of bike I'd say is the Dawes Audax, followed by the Thorn Audax. Both are steel and a touch over 10kg (more with fittings). There are others out there, but none springs to mind for the price and commonality required to make the purchase. But you may be lucky.
For a start, try putting 'audax' into ebay search to see the sort of bikes that come up.
Edit: As pete75 mentioned above, the Ridgeback Horizon also seems like a good candidate.

Re: which used Audax style bike?
I have a Tange steel Charge Juicer Hi which weighs 9.9kg. I use it in the winter and bought it so as not to destroy my other decent bikes. I had quite a few options on my list and this one happened to come up first, on ebay, and I won the auction. I have no idea why they do not seem to re-sell well, on the second hand market, because they are very comfy, robust, tough, light and not flashy... When I will finally destroy it, I will, for sure buy another one (although they have stopped making it now). I am more than happy with it.

This is currently £380, (no bids) looks like it is in great shape and comes with a good 105 groupset. It looks like your size but best to check this.
The only fly in the ointment - and there always is one! - is that there are no rack mounts. However, I simply use the mudguard hole and have bought a clip that neatly wraps around the tube for the upper screw. No problems at all.
I can also vouch for Dawes Audax bikes. The 631 tubed ones are excellent and are well equipped. The 520 ones heavy and not so.

Hi chocjohn9 , Thank you very much for your message. This is the kind of information and recommendation I am looking for!
Unfortunately, I am quite busy today , final decision about a new job to be made today, so I may not have time to devote to investigating this bike, but I will try.

Nice bike. A tad weighty for having 105 grupo and RS20s.
No doubt the bids will start in the final 5 mins.
Straight forks! That might become a chore with 23mm tyres even at 100 psi.
OK gearset.
I wouldn't pay more than £400 for it.

I was thinking, a tad light for a CroMo frame.
A good contrast to my titanium frame with CF forks, the two bikes come out at the same weight.
I did my best as a weight weeny but triple cranksets, 36 spoke wheels, large rear cassettes and 28mm tyres weigh more than compact doubles, close ratio cassettes, 23mm tyres and low spoke count wheels.
