you can get travel agents with built-in barrel adjusters. You can also get inline barrel adjusters.

Thanks all, those Tektro gadgets look spot on.

I'm considering trying some compact drops on my do-all bike/MTB tourer type thingy, utilising some downtube shifters and Kelly Take Offs (they're 7 spd but I assume you can set them up for 8spd with the limit screw??)

I just need to measure up so I get the stem and reach into a reasonable position.
