Lost a gear while refitting Nexus 8 hub. Help please!

Post by Slimtim »

I recently bought a Pedersen which I love.

So much so that I decided to get it some new tyres. Fitting the front one OK. Fitted the back one OK.

However, when I came to reinstall the rear wheel (which is built on a Shimano Nexus 8 hub) I found that I have lost a gear. It will now only change up as far as number 7.

On further inverstigation, I have discovered that there is more to dealing with these hubs than I first thought and I seem to have been rather cavalier in my approach.

Things I didn't do include
- take a note of where the shifter was when I took the wheel off
- resist the temptation to undo the little locking collar that holds the rotating part to the hub

I have tried ti realign the little red and yellow blobs of paint on the rear hub the best I can but after many attempts I can only get into an indicated gear 7. Extremely frustrating.

I am holding off completing the reinstallation in the hope that someone can guide me......

Many thanks in advance.

Hi
I guess the first thing to check is the yell dots line when in 4th gear.
These can be seen from above through the inspection window or from below.
If it's not that then I guess take the "thing" off with the yell and red dots and try fitting it again. I'm pretty sure I fitted my one wrong once and whilst not disastrous it didn't feel right.
The other I did wrong once was that I hadn't properly seated the cable that slots into the "reaction arm".

I'm sure others will be along shortly with (hopefully) clearer suggestions and more ideas.

Good luck.

The red dots on the pulley and the cable arm need to be aligned this will then fit onto the splined washer (the selector shaft) and also the square bit attached to the axle, thus the axle and the selector are now in correct orientation to each other. The dots on the clip simply allow correct fitting of the retainer to stop it dropping off.
Now providing you have not altered the nipple position attached to the gear cable, when it is fitted and it is snug in the bottom of the V pulley and not snagged over anything (And the end of the gear cable outer is fully 'home' in its socket) put into 4th and align the yellow dots with the barrel adjuster. It cannot help but to be right :)

Guys many thanks for the swift feedback.

I had a cup of coffee and a look at some youtube and then saw your notes.

Calmer, I went back to the start, removed, refitted and checkec the yellow dots. Found that the cable ferrule at the shifter end had popped out.

Now all fine again and working. The bike looks great on its tan wall tyres and I have learnt something new. A good day!
