Police Thugs
Re: Police Thugs
I came across a road block on my way home from work a few years ago. A polite enquiry to the police-woman on duty elicited the information that there was a gas problem. I asked if it was safe to go through, and was allowed to do so provided that I undertook not to smoke, which seemed reasonable (especially as I have never done so, and wasn't going to choose that moment to start).
It can't have been a huge risk, because I rode through the hamlet and residents were taking out cups of tea to the emergency services, who were keeping watch while the gas company's team made whatever repairs were necessary. However, it had been felt necessary to stop motor traffic going through, perhaps just to keep the road clear.

And the large amount of sparks and heat generated by engines.
IIRC the Brunswick explosion was ignited by a motor vehicle generated spark...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Re: Police Thugs
Yes, but my point was that they had not evacuated the residents, so presumably the risk was limited.

A PC so young he still had acne rudely told us to go back road closed - no explanation, no politeness , no alternative route suggested- maybe he'd just been on a course - "how to make the public dislike the police force"."
That is unacceptable. Especially as the vast majority of people would cooperate willingly if it was explained why any reasonable course of action was being taken.

My LBS had a contract to maintain a bicycle fleet used by workers in restricted areas within the Grangemouth oil refinery. Bikes were used in areas where no motor vehicles were allowed. I'd guess the risk of sparks from bikes must be close enough to zero.
Re: Police Thugs
Mmm, I'm sure I remember seeing a TdF when Ullrich came off at speed in a wet time trial, with a shower of sparks from a pedal....
However I don't suppose the refinery workers rode with such style

jUST THINK ABOUT what would have happwened if it had been someoen else other than the police - you wopuld have had a lot of platitudes, no action and their word against yours.
Its also happened to me by some copper - don't expect anything of them. I suspect said copper realised you would stop but grabbed anyway- - they only ask the ones to stop who they think will
Bung ina complaint - if you want a visit from a lisaon officer - as I said to him I would rather he was on the proverbial beat than talking to me. This concerned an incident when I was hospitalised following a RTA and the Police initially denied they attended the scene

Hi,
I have got to an age where you can call me, wringkly, past it, over the hill, but every time I go into a stressful situation even just riding my bike on the highway, I expect the worse, forearmed is better for your well being than niave or surprised and let down.
You would be extremly niave and stupid not to realise that Saville and Smith were protected by the police.
Why else would special branch be hiding Smith's procecution file in their safe
Savilles tea parties with the fuzz, and both were given master keys to the dorms
Get real and make adult decisions that are your own and learn to live and accept that.
The government want societies to take charge of and make are own decisions but putting unelected commisionares in charge who seem more political than working class, makes you realise that its all propagander to lead us by the nose or at best confuse us more.
What I say should not deter you from still trying, I still try but am more used to the outcome.

Not really a subject for a joke. I've known a few people with persistent post-adolescent acne, through no fault of their own. It can be quite a big psychological problem, and one that is difficult to get your doctor to take seriously.

It certainly was at our school - even the teachers joined in.....

Take heart. In the US you'd most likely have been shot. In Zimbabewe you'd be arrested and tortured and in Jockland you'd have your feet nailed to the floor while they played Jimmy shand records.
Re: Police Thugs
In my last posts I think I was giving the benefit of the doubt to the police. Now I've had a rethink.
I still expect 'most' police to be...well,'balanced'. But there's always political pressure, targets, politcal correctness gone mad. Maybe some Police Commisioner on £150k has decided he must do something for his £s and grand pension and instigated some pressure be put upon cyclists.Wouldn't you like to keep that salary? After all,it may be easier to stop cyclists than 30ton lorries on the road! Think o the traffic hold up behind lorries if you were to stop 'em in London!!
Anyone remember the Free Tibet demo in London when the police went OTT on banners ripping them from innocent demonstrators when the Chinese bigwigs came a visit? Remember where they arrested some young guy for asking if a police horse was gay!! What gets into 'em?

No not that....
