Hmph....
Goretex .... is this the connection with cheese!
STI gearing .... OK so long as you keep adjusting your cables
Sub 17lb bikes .... they existed before you were in nappies. Anyway, what's that in 'modern' units???
Hydraulic brakes .... OK but you need a PhD in Engineering to maintain the damn things...
Puncture proof tyres .... oh yes - and flying pigs and hens' teeth.
Gel insert saddles .... sore posterior guaranteed....

Come to think of it, I'm rather partial to a nice Gouda myself. Mind you, it has to be a good 'un. And it has to be pronounced correctly...
Comté is another one that tickles my palate...

Love that stuff when it's well-aged. Had the extra belegen a couple of times, want to try the overjarige some time. I like it when it's a wee bit crunchy. Old Grana's good as well.

The crunchiness comes from salt which has crystallised out. Definitely Not Good For You, but..... :)

I think it's a bit more than salt, but I couldn't tell you what. I can't eat much of it, though: most hard cheeses contain some kind of toxin I'm hypersensitive to. Soft cheeses like Camembert I can eat in any (realistic) amount.

I'm very partial to bit of Comte'. I like the nuttiness that goes along with the slightly sweet and sour tang to it.

Altogether a lovely complex bit of dairy ;)

Ahh, the grumpiness of the long distance cheese eater. I can pretty much guarantee we'll all be riding electronic gears in the next 18 months. They just work, and very well. Plus they make robot noises and the front mech auto corrects and senses where the chainrings are! Its a kind of magic.

It's the rear mech that bothers me. With my Ergos, it invariably somehow manages to park itself precisely midway between two cogs, so the chain can't decide which one to be on. Oh for the straightforwardness of friction levers! But perhaps that's for another thread....

Incidentally, probably the most 'long distance' cheese we partake of, is paneer. Not on its own, mind, but an essential ingredient in several yummy Asian recipes. I doubt if the version we get in our local supermarket makes it all the way from the subcontinent, though...

I should emphasise, I'm only 'retro' and grumpy when it suits.
Bottom brackets, for instance. In my youth the changeover from cotter pins to tapers was happening - I was delighted with the improvement (though shocked at how expensive the early-generation tapered sets were)! I doubt if anyone on this forum wants to state the case for cotter pins....
(*hasty retreat*)
On the other hand don't try to talk me into a splined B/B. Why should I be locked into a specific brand, and need special tools?

As for headsets: well I can see how Aheadsets are a whole lot easier to assemble than quills. I do still admire the elegance of quills - I have them on two of my bikes - as well as the free height adjustment. But on a new bike, or new self assembly - well I'd accept the Aheadset option. Except for putting in the star nut - I've found that a right pain!

Maybe I should combine this thread and the other two 'frightened of' threads.

I didn't really take in the 'frightened of' bit of this thread, at first.

Ah well, this is the only one that would really send me scuttling behind the sofa!
