Cycling glasses & rain

I have always found cycling glasses and rain mutually incompatible so I take my glasses off when it rains which can be painful in heavy rain, and leaved the eyes susceptible to mud splash. Has anyone found a way round this problem?

Rain-X* on the outside and don't breathinto them works for me. What problem do you find you are getting?

*Other makes of rain repellent are available, some swear by furniture polish

Just poor visibility through the lense because of the rain splash. I haven't tried Rain-X though.

Baseball cap under helmet. Looks daft but works - usually. Very light, drifting rain floats up & get them anyway.

I don't use cycling glogs, just my everyday ones.

A periodic wipe with the terry bit of a cycling glove clears them OK for me - just remember to use one hand for the glasses & the other for nose wiping or your glasses can get very messy! Personally I usually find fog worse than rain.

Rick.

I use a peak cap on my upright but its a problem on the recumbent because the face is turned up & the peak catches the wind, with obvious results. The upturned face is another reason I want to solve the problem. Your eyes feel a lot more exposed in the rain.

I like using a peeked cap as well. Also an occasional wipe of my gloves seems to help. When I go out for longer rides in the rain I will pack a small towel for cleaning.

Baseball cap but no helmet, works the same but more comfortable.

I use Sal Clear TTX on my spectacles with polycarbonate lenses.

I wear bigger goggles over my usual glasses in winter (I'm more Fred than Froome). I can see through rain fine. I suspect the greater distance of the rainy lenses from my eyes helps. I do wipe them with gloves in heavy rain though.

What sort or model are these goggles please?

I sometimes wish I'd the money for the permanent solution - lazer eye surgery.

My optician has in the past tried to convince me of a system they sell that involves specially treated lenses and then a spray that you apply occasionally. I can't remember it's name, only that it was quite pricey, but the optician implied that it was the best solution available. And they do specialize in sports glasses. Sorry that's not mush help.

Also, Optilab lenses allegedly come with an anti-fog coating. I don't know when this became standard, because the two pairs of glasses I've had from them steam up readily enough. That's when I have to take them off at night, as it becomes impossible to see especially with the glare of car headlights. I'm right at the edge of being able to see without glasses now... :?

Clear, vented safety goggles about £2 from a builders merchant. I think my current ones are http://m.wickes.co.uk/Safety-Glasses-Clear/p/186931 - not fashionable but do the job better than any others I've tried so far.

Cheers for that :) I think I will spend a couple of pounds on those.

Agreed: IMO your whole body is more exposed to rain on a 'bent.
Also rain + night time oncoming headlights seem much more of a problem due to lower eye height.
Solutions? High racer or velomobile
