Ex-Royal Marine Ross Started 14/02/2014

Post by notlobgp14 »

This morning Ross started out from Lands End on his way to JoG

The trip he is taking on is one serious expedition at this time of year. He is riding a Surly and carrying Camping Gear, wow.

See some photo's on his facebook Ross' Magic Cycle; https://www.facebook.com/Magicycle

Rather him than me. Respect!

I followed the link and the picture of him ready to face the floods reminded me of this photo of my fellow Lejoger.

We are both members of the same diving club and we were raising money for Dementia UK. We called ourselves “Divers for Dementia” and the shot was for the local Rag.

Well done Ross. Not the beast weather to be camping in though.

I'm not saying that I could or would do it, but he is a young, fit (I presume) ex- Royal Marine, he's on a bike with camping gear and it's early spring in the UK. It is great that he is doing it and very warm hearted of him to raise money for Great Ormond Street and his family should be impressed. I also presume his daily mileage is quite high (I couldn't find out what exactly). But I couldn't see anything especially noteworthy about it apart from the obvious (it's cold and wet out there and he has a long way to go). Is there something I'm missing?

PS I hope this doesn't sound churlish.

Cycling is tough in the winter. it's OK for a couple of hours - in winter sunshine it's idyllic. But then it gets dark and cold ... and you get cold .... It's tougher mentally as well.

PS Hope nobody thought my post above meant that I didn't think he was doing well - just wondered if there was an angle on it.

My thoughts when I did the Original Post; February, Recent bad weather and sleeping out.

Our son was in the Corp's with Ross and he's still serving. I'm sure it must be very hard to adjust for the guys who re-enter civvy life, hence this self imposed challenge. I didn't realise until following Ross that he has never cycled any distance beyond 20 miles and not cycled since his teens.

All in all he has set himself a stern test, I only hope he makes it to prove that he's still 'got it' and give his confidence a boost. :D

I remain unconvinced by these no doubt well intentioned endeavours. Why don't people actually do something useful for charity, like volunteering for their local hospice :?

Judging by the amount of effort that goes into fundraising my local hospice find money very useful...
