Snakebiteless Riding.

Post by Gearoidmuar »

For the past 20 years I've done most of my road-riding on bikes with 26 inch wheels, using Specialized Fatboys slick tyres (very hard to get them now), which are as fast as any road tyres on 700c. They are a bit fatter than 35c but have a light supple casing making them fast. I've NEVER EVER had a snakebite puncture on 26 inch wheels. That's because they're fat enough.
My more recent touring bikes have all been 26in wheeled as a consequence, modified MTBs or most recently a Thorn Raven Tour.

The worst run of pinch flats I ever saw was when a pal had for some strange reason decided to wear out his "summer" tyres on his "winter wheels".
He had something like 25mm tyres on some fairly wide rims, so the tyre was too low profile.
He got flat after flat when we rode Rudland Rigg, which was just an average stony track at the time....he got a few "doubles" but no "triples" as I recall, unlike the OP. We ran low on patches, never mind spare tubes.

Last time I remember getting a pinch flat was on a MTB with 26" wheels and knobblies, must have hit something fairly big. This was years ago, I don't get them often at all, but I don't ride narrow section tyres, and I'm only 11 stone.

Remember, anything you do (or don't do) to your bike can have safety implications

Cheers!
