tent pegs
What do you use to hit tent pegs in when you are cycle touring? Presumably you won't be carrying a mallet!
I feel sure that the genius that did this, didn't even feel a thud as he drove by.

I stand on 'em to push them into the ground *
You only need to hit 'em if the ground is stony - ergo there will be stones around to hit 'em with.
* doesn't work as well with soft soled shoes (or bare feet)

Either feet although you want to be careful as said if you're wearing soft shoes, or you can get plastic mallets for like £1-2 which generally have a handy peg puller on the end too. Depends really on the surfaces you expect to pitch on whether it's worth the mallet though!

Re: tent pegs
I've been using Twizzle pegs for camping with/without bike for about 20 years or so
They are becoming hard to find but here's a recent find
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Twizzle-Pegs- ... 20df0f22cb
You don't need anything like a hammer with these as they just screw into the ground
They are made out of plastic so are lighter than metal pegs
I suppose if ground is rock hard it would be a problem

You can buy Twizzle Pegs here in UK: http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co. ... s-1-1.html
Re: tent pegs
Why not use a mallet? i certainly do. Standing on pegs can damage them, there aren't always rocks available and my trusty mallet only weighs in at a little over 200 grams and easily fits in a pannier with the tent. I use a variety of Ti and Al pegs and whilst you can sometimes push them in by hand, 30 seconds with the mallet ensures they are secure.
Convention? what's that then?

Doesn't neccesarily add up, my heaviest metal pegs are 9 grams each, my lightest 1 gram each. Plastic pegs can't match them for weight or size so for lightweight camping they are not a good choice.

Re: tent pegs
Metal cleats on Shimano sandals work well, you can give a nice firm push.
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

I asked a similar question last year, so here are some answers I got
